About Us

What is seiritsu

What is Seiritsu?

Seiritsu is a private, co-educational high school located in Tokyo, the capital city of Japan. It was founded in 1925.

The school offers a comprehensive range of course programs and currently the Tokyo campus population is approximately 1400 students and over 100 staff. There are three grades at the high school; the first grade (ages 15-16), the second grade (ages 16-17) and the third year graduating grade (ages 17-18). The junior high school has three grades as well: the first grade (ages 12-13), the second grade (ages 13-14) and the third year of mandatory schooling (ages 14-15).

Seiritsu is situated in northern part of the city, near the major Akabane train station, making the school’s location quite convenient. While many students live close enough to bike or ride a city bus to school, most students arrive by using one or more of the many train and subway lines that crisscross the city, plus outer city areas. 30 minutes to an hour is considered a normal commute time for most people in the city going to school or work.

The School’s mottos are:

1. Be Considerate

Take care of others with consideration and respect.

2. Be Efficient

Learn to be efficient while always doing your very best.

3. Be Constructive

Make a constant effort to achieve your goals all the time.

While the school was founded as a boy’s only commerce school, female students were introduced into the school from 2004. Over the years, the school has consistently improved its course offerings and facilities, with most of our students going onto post-secondary education and many going onto high level universities in Japan and abroad

Normal school with extra activities

Seiritsu is a typical Japanese high school that also offers honors and regular academic course programs, plus a student athlete academic course for students wishing to become professional athletes after graduation. In addition to the main Tokyo campus, Seiritsu has a world class soccer, baseball and tennis training ground, plus dormitory, located in Saitama prefecture, north of Tokyo. While Seiritsu runs sports programs for hundreds of elementary to high school aged students at the training ground, its main purpose is to be used by the high school student athletes in the soccer and baseball clubs. These students attend academic lessons in the morning at the main campus, and then commute by train to the training ground for afternoon practices. Many of these students live in the dormitory located beside the fields.

In conjunction with developing the academic success of the students, the school has many sports and culture clubs with long histories. For example, the tennis club started in 1936, the karate club started in 1963 and the soccer club started in 1967.

Club life in a Japanese high school is very important, allowing the students to learn new skills, develop leadership capabilities, encourage teamwork and have the opportunity to participate as a representative of the school in a number of sporting and cultural contests or events. Many of the life-long friendships Japanese people have are made in the school club they participated in during their high school years, and Seiritsu is no different. Seiritsu prides itself on offering an extremely wide range of clubs, both in sports and culture.

To recognize the important value of club life for the students, the school employs professional full-time coaches for the major clubs. Many of the coaches are former national team and/or professional athletes in their respective sports. Throughout the years the school has produced many regional and national champions, under the guidance of professional coaching staff.

Clubs meet several times a week and competitions are held frequently. Also, many of the clubs have a summer training camp outside of Tokyo somewhere else in Japan for one week, where coaches, club members and sometimes club alumni meet to practice everyday at a training center while also staying together in a dormitory. The summer camp is a big highlight in the year for most students.

Seiritsu’s Japanese martial arts clubs may be of interest to many foreign students. Students may be able to compete at a variety of tournaments. Students without experience, and those with some any previous experience from any branch of these martial arts, are welcome to participate in any of the clubs to build up their own abilities, create team spirit and achieve tournament results.

Due to the sheer size of Tokyo, there are far more opportunities to compete in most sports then some foreign countries can offer all together. This has tended to produce many national and world champion athletes at the high school level.

In addition to the international students at the school, foreign student groups visit Seiritsu several times a year. Through this interaction for either cultural reasons or to train with one of the school’s sports clubs, Seiritsu has a growing network of international relationships with foreign schools.

programs

Here at Seiritsu, we want our students to meet students from around the world. Finding a way to fit in some visits and special events can be difficult but we try our best to make sure that everyone has a wonderful experience. The type of program that you choose will depend on your needs and your situation. Let us work together to find an ideal program for you.

Brent Regan is the Head of the International Department. He is from Calgary, Canada.

He came to Japan in October 1997 to further his karate under a famous karate teacher。He planned to stay in Japan for 3 to 6 months. However, one thing led to another and his time in Japan became much longer than expected. He is now currently a 5th degree black belt in his style of Karate.

Brent began teaching English at a number of different language schools at the beginning of his stay and then in 2005 he began teaching in high schools. He has taught all ages and all levels of English learners.

A chance meeting with a fellow Canadian karateka, Richard Mosdell, led to a great friendship and eventually to Seiritsu. Richard was the Head of the International Department at Seiritsu at that time. When Richard found himself moving back to Canada, he introduced Brent and Seiritsu to each other. Brent came to Seiritsu in 2014 and has been in charge of the International Department ever since. He has been involved with a lot of new activities at the school to help promote global opportunities.

JC was born and raised in the United States, surrounded by cornfields in the rural state of Iowa, not far from the mighty MIssissippi River. He always had an interest in geography, culture and language. He attended the University of Iowa, majoring in Anthropology, and also studied the Japanese language as part of his studies. He eventually decided to join the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET) as a way to experience life and work in Japan, a country he had learned a lot about, intending to stay two years. He was assigned an English teaching position in a rural corner of the already rural Fukushima prefecture. He picked up the local dialect with relish, and enjoyed the bountiful mountain nature of the area for two years before marrying his wife, from the relatively nearby regional city of Aizu Wakamatsu. After spending over 3 more years in Fukushima, he and his wife and young son moved to Tokyo.

JC taught at two well-known junior/senior high schools in Chiba, commuting from nearby Tokyo during this time. He was also involved in a number of international exchange groups using his interpretation skills as well as some pro bono Japanese English translation for volunteer projects. In 2018, JC started his current position at Seiritsu Gakuen, as an International Department coordinator and English teacher.

In his free time JC enjoys watching professional sumo and sharing knowledge he has accumulated about the sport to the greater world. He also enjoys watching classic movies and traveling in Japan and abroad. Though he originally planned to stay in Japan only two years, he currently has no plans to leave Japan, having lived here over half his life.

Jensy Franco

Jensy was born in New Jersey but grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, right in the center of the United States. Nebraska is known for its agriculture. However, Omaha, the state's largest city, is famous for places like the Henry Doorly Zoo. Jensy’s family is from El Salvador, a small country in Central America. She speaks both English and Spanish.

In December 2020, Jensy graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and an ESL endorsement. Since then, she has worked as a substitute teacher in the Omaha area, teaching students across all grade levels. She enjoys working with students from diverse backgrounds and helping them succeed.

At university, Jensy was involved in international student organizations. She made lasting friendships, especially with Japanese exchange students. Through this, she was introduced to Japanese culture and participated in several cultural events. Her love for teaching and growing interest in Japan led her to apply for the JET Program.

Outside of teaching, Jensy is a big fan of Disney. She worked at Walt Disney World in Florida twice through the Disney College Program, creating great memories and friendships. Jensy also loves cute things, such as Sanrio, Disney, and the color pink. In her free time, she enjoys traveling and café hopping.

Julia Vandervoort

Julia Vandervoort was born in the suburbs of Belleville, Illinois, but has also lived in chilly Michigan, beautiful Arkansas, and famous Florida! Growing up, she could be found admiring the vast midwestern cornfields, playing in the snow, and going tubing on the lake. She’s always been extremely passionate about the universality of the human experience as it relates to music, storytelling, and languages - an affection that prompted her decision to study Japanese language and culture and theatre performance at Florida State University. She had the tremendous privilege of studying abroad for six weeks at Waseda University the summer of her junior year, and absolutely fell in love with the adventure of living in a country so profoundly different from the world she knew. Hoping to achieve fluency in the language and grow as an artist, she applied to the JET program her senior year, joining the Seiritsu Gakuen family in summer of 2025. When not animatedly acting out English grammar points, Julia can be found practicing her singing, performing improv, or self-studying Japanese. 読んでくれてありがとうございます。よろしくお願いします!
